Sir Stephen Wall
Stephen was for 35 years a British diplomat. He lived and worked in Ethiopia, France, the United States, Portugal and Belgium, as well as doing lengthy stints in London where he worked for Prime Ministers Jim Callaghan, John Major and Tony Blair and other British politicians.
As Britain’s Ambassador to Portugal in the 1990s, his job included helping the sizeable British community in the country, promoting British exports and literally and figuratively “flying the flag” for the UK to promote warm relations with Britain’s oldest ally. He did a similar job as the UK’s Ambassador to the European Union from 1995-2000 in what was a stimulating, if sometimes, tense, environment.
Since then, Stephen has worked in the not for profit sector, mainly in education and human rights. He has published four books charting the UK’s relations with her former EU partners.
